Gran Canaria North East Route Road Trip

Try this on a Sunday to visit the markets or take the itinerary in reverse on weekdays to visit the Rum factory (09:00-14:00).

Heading towards Las Palmas there is a spectacular place called CALDERA DE BANDAMA.  It is a volcanic crater, from there you will have a beautiful view of our capital and of many vineyards that find in that area.

The name of Bandama comes from a merchant named Van Damme, who bought these lands to grow grapes.

Then head up more towards the north center of the island to meet with the town of SAN MATEO, here every Sunday there is a market of everything related to food and other things, for example, potatoes, vegetables, medicinal plants, sweets, liquors and wines, all produced on our island.

Throughout this area along with San Mateo you will realise the climatic diversity of the island, feeling yourself in a verge of life.  Tip – the markets will finish at approximately 13:00 so head out early to enjoy the most of the time there.

Heading towards Arucas next with its most important sights undoubtedly being the church of San Juan Bautista  – built with stones from Arucas its construction was started in 1909 and lasted 68 years – and the Rum Factory Arehucas- home of our famous honey rum.  The city borders on the foot of the eponymous mountain Arucas, an ancient volcano.

Whilst LAS PALMAS undoubtedly deserves a day exploring to itself, head towards the chic capital city and choose which of the many attractions to visit:

Gran Canaria West Route Road Trip

Head along the South coast of Gran Canaria, observing the famous Dunes of Maspalomas in the distance as you drive towards MOGAN.  Take time to visit Puerto de Mogan, enjoying a walk through the harbour or coffee and breakfast  in one the waterfront restaurants.

Often described as “Little Venice”, the port of Mogan is on most peoples “to do list” when visiting Gran Canaria. Either head here on a Friday if you want to catch the legendary market or any other day to stroll around and soak in the relaxing atmosphere.

Head inland through the village of MOGAN, through the tiny village of El Hornillo looking out for the interesting over-sized sculptures, heading towards SAN NICOLAS DE TOLENTINO, also known as LA ALDEA.

Very famous for its ecological tomato and banana plantations, exporting them to Spain and foreign countries.

This beautiful and small fishing port that is located northwest of Gran Canaria, from here ferries leave daily to Tenerife.  Take in lunch at one of the fish restaurants and take time to see the famous DEDO DE DIOS (gods finger) a rock formation similar to the finger of a hand.

You cannot leave this beautiful valley without having tasted its oranges, its wines and of course, its coffee, made right here, one of the few places in Europe where this product is collected.

At the Los Berrazales winery you will be treated exquisitely, and you will taste this great coffee. The party of La Rama is one of the best known on the island, it is celebrated every 4th of August.

From here, drive through the island to PICO DE LAS NIEVES, the highest point of the island, with its 1,949 meters of altitude.

Stop still for 1 minute and appreciate the impressive views from here;  on a clear day you can observe the southern slope, SAN BARTOLOME DE TIRAJANA, FATAGA and the MASPALOMAS DUNES and the sunset view from here is simply amazing.

What goes up must come down, so start the descent back to the South coast road via the quaint village of Fataga.  Stop here for an afternoon coffee or refreshment in one of the small cafes and soak in the sleepy atmosphere of the village, or walk through the welcoming shops selling local arts.

Drive through the impressive Valley of 1000 palms in Fataga as you head towards Maspalomas and home.
